Stowaways : recent cases in West Africa 04/07/2017

Loss Prevention

In recent months there has been an increase in the number of stowaways trying to board ships at West African ports. Cases include stowaways found in the rudder trunk who were only spotted by shore boats and by a passing ferry. The ships in question were fined by the authorities. Members are reminded that they should carry out a thorough pre-departure search for possible stowaways, and should be aware that stowaways might have gained access to the rudder trunk.
